Coaching has become a popular term and concept
both in the world of business and self-help over the past several years. There
is now an entire industry devoted to coaching, including numerous books on
the subject, a growing cadre of trained
individuals providing life coaching or other forms of coaching,
and several professional organizations that certify individuals as coaches.
The term coaching has taken on a life of its own and now means many things
to many people.
In the purest sense, a coach helps a person to achieve
his/her own goals. Coaching draws out the best in a person or a group and
provides guidance and support. Therefore, a supervisor cannot really be a
coach in this pure sense of the term because a
supervisor must also set goals for the person and must direct the person toward
organizational outcomes.
